Hikes through the Rastenbach Gorge
The Rastenbach Gorge, located between Altenburg and Lake Caldaro, impresses with its waterfalls and natural pools, surrounded by ivy-covered trees and fallen trunks, as well as the gentle flow of cool water, creating a remarkable natural monument.
The starting point for this hike is the charming Church of St. Vigil in Altenburg, above Lake Caldaro. From there, follow trail no. 2, which soon leads to a viewpoint offering a magnificent panorama of Lake Caldaro. After a short detour to the ruins of St. Peter, the route continues under the imposing suspension bridge and down steps into the gorge.
The trail is well marked with signs for route no. 1 leading toward Müllereck–Lake Caldaro. From this point, the gorge can be explored via beautifully constructed metal walkways, bridges, and forest paths. Following the stairs along the steep rock face, you descend further. At a junction, turning right leads to the impressive large waterfall before rejoining the main path. The Kardatsch trail no. 10 then continues until it meets the Peace Trail again. This well-maintained path leads uphill through the forest and back toward the starting point.
The Peace Trail also provides access to the upper part of the Rastenbach Gorge, where metal walkways and stairs once again lead along the streambed before finally returning to Altenburg.
Interestingly, between the 15th and 17th centuries, lead ore was mined in this area, which shows that the region was already settled at an early stage.
