The Peace Path
Starting from the St. Anton sports area, the Caldaro Peace Trail—created between 1995 and 2000 by a group led by Georg Reider—leads through a picturesque landscape of forest and nature to the wild Rastenbach Gorge and finally to St. Peter in Altenburg. For the return route, trail no. 11 is recommended.
Along the trail, eight reflection points invite hikers and pilgrims to pause and reflect. Artists have designed the five themes “Moderation, Prudence, Justice, Faith, and Hope,” adapting them to the surrounding environment. The sixth point, “Courage,” is located in the Rastenbach Gorge, while the ruins of St. Peter in Altenburg—presumably the oldest church ruins in Tyrol—represent the seventh point, “Love.” At the site where the medieval bridge once stood, the 37-meter-long (suspension) Peace Bridge was built, symbolizing the eighth reflection point. On the four supporting pillars of the structure, the word “Peace” is inscribed in five languages: German, Italian, Sanskrit, Hebrew, and Arabic.
To complete the trail safely, sturdy footwear is recommended, and surefootedness is required in some sections.
Arrival
On foot – 50 min: From the house, follow the road uphill and take the forest path towards the Sonnegghof inn. About 100 m before the inn, turn left onto the forest trail leading towards the St. Anton sports area. At the end of the path, cross the road to the right above the parking lot. The Peace Trail begins behind the football field.
By car – 5 min: From the house, follow the road towards St. Anton. At the St. Anton sports area, you’ll find the parking lot, and just behind it the football field where the Peace Trail starts.
By bus: Bus connection to Altenburg (www.sii.bz.it)
